SOUNDSYSTEM CULTURE IS A PEOPLE CULTURE

ABOUT US

Rival Soundsystem is a soundsystem and collective based out of Toronto, ON, Canada. Formerly part of the Iron Lung Soundsystem, half of the system was adopted by Rhombi in 2025 with the intention of continuing the legacy of soundsystem culture in the region.

The system provides a rich heavyweight bass sound and undeniable presence, which compliments bass forward selections and quality sound design. The Rival crew is multidisciplinary, with a deep love and passion for the community essence of soundsystem culture and the politics that underpin soundsystem music as the sound of resistance.

OUR VALUES

As a team we are committed to creating and supporting inclusive programming through the representation of a broad range of cultural expressions and artistic practices through our events.  We make fair compensation for artists and crew members a priority, because we want artists and crew to know their skills, their experience, and the labour they share is integral to making any event successful.  We stand by our commitment to addressing power imbalances in the scene that make it difficult for independent artists and underground electronic music to flourish sustainably.

WHY RIVAL?

We chose the name Rival because it calls back to the community roots of soundsystem culture in the form of the sound clash. Starting out as an informal rivalry, the sound clash developed as the result of friendly competition between sound system crews battling to produce the best selections and performance in order to be crowned victorious by the watching crowd.
Sound system culture is competitive at heart, and we want to keep that drive at the centre of what we do. The clash is important in bringing the best out of anyone.

COMMUNITY& RESPECT

At our parties, we expect everyone (this includes guests, DJs, and crew) to be respectful of each other at all times. Respect and consideration are core values of any space our system occupies.

We will not tolerate any form of hate- or oppression-based language or behaviour, including but definitely not limited to racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, zionism, ableism, xenophobia, etc.

Let's create a warm and welcoming environment for everyone, together.
